Chengdu has been an important business center since trade on the Silk Road began more than 2,000 years ago. As the capital of China's Sichuan Province, Chengdu is a city of more than ten million people. Also known as the Panda Capital, Chengdu is thought by some to be the oldest established city in the world. It is a hub for railways, post, and telecommunications for southwestern China. Recently, Intel selected Chengdu as the site for a new $200 million factory. Intel's entry into Chengdu was aided in part by the contracts and knowledge from over 20 years' worth of Phoenix Sister Cities connections.
