Calgary 15th Anniversary Delegation Visit
Phoenix Sister Cities was pleased to welcome Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi for his first visit to Phoenix, February 1-3, 2013. The visit marked the 15th anniversary of the Sister Cities relationship and kicked off Canada Week in Phoenix.
Mayor Nenshi’s Friday program included a breakfast hosted by Phoenix Vice Mayor Bill Gates followed by a briefing on the Phoenix Sister Cities program; a walking tour of the downtown Phoenix biomedical campus; discussion on business development initiatives; a luncheon hosted by Arizona State University’s Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation; and a tour of the Tempe main campus, coordinated by Colin Tetreault, Senior Policy Advisor for Sustainability to Mayor Stanton.
A Friday evening reception was hosted by KeatsConnelly, a cross-border wealth management firm that has its’ main office in Phoenix and just opened an office in Calgary. Guests included Councilwoman Thelda Williams, City Council liaison for the Phoenix-Calgary sister cities affiliation, Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos, members of the local business community, Phoenix Sister Cities Board Members, and key leaders from the Canadian community in Phoenix.
Mayor Nenshi joined Mayor Stanton on Saturday for the 60th annual Great Canadian Picnic at South Mountain Park. Addressing those in attendance, Mayor Nenshi highlighted the strength of the longstanding relationship and emphasized the common bonds between the two cities. Phoenix Sister Cities Calgary Committee members were pleased that Mayor Nenshi took time to stop by their booth and speak to the 2013 Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassadors who helped with the event.
